Featherstone Backbone 1P Trekking Pole Tent

Just got back from three nights in Shenandoah National Park. For the price you really can't beat this tent. Fit my large sleeping pad well and plenty of room for me to lay down at 6 foot 2. Gear all fit under the vestibule and then tent pitched really easy.

I purchased the Featherstone Backbone 1P Trekking Pole Tent after reviewing several others on the market. My criteria considered, design, cost, and weight. I wanted a 1P pole tent that had sufficient room for myself (6 ft, 205 bs), had a sufficient sized vestibule for storing my boots and pack, and would hold up to wilderness conditions of heavy rain and wind. I have now used the tent on several multiday trips, in the Sierras off the JMT, and in the Pacific Northwest in the Cascades and Olympics. Although I haven't yet experienced heavy rains, it did perform well in moderate rains lasting over one hour with 20 mph winds. I would use the extra guy lines if the winds were heavier. This is a single wall tent prone to condensation, but there is sufficient air flow to vent out. I did keep the outer fly open slightly within the covered zipper screen which seemed to help when it was raining. Setup was generally easy once I got the poles adjusted to the right height (around 47 inches). I appreciated the pole sleeve to secure the pole and protect the tent. The tent weighs around 27 ounces so saving me a pound of weight if I was carrying my MSR 2p tent. I would recommend this tent to anyone interested in a well-made lightweight tent that will hold up to most typical conditions during summer/fall backpacking.

Was finally able to try out my tent. I was always skeptical about trekking pole tents. After hearing many good things about Featherstone Backbone, I figured why not. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to setup. The next day was pretty windy. I was a bit nervous about setting up. Decided to place my pack on top of the tent. Was able to stake all 4 corners, then positioned the trekking poles. Afterwards, I was able to adjust the guidelines and reposition the stakes. Took longer then the first time but it was pretty windy. That night the temperature dropped below 40° and super windy. To my surprise, the tent held up and I was able to stay warm. : )
I only gave it 4 stars because I want to see how it holds up in the rain. I also wished it came with a footprint. Other than that, I am very pleased with my purchase.

This is an exceptional tent for weight and space conscious outdoorsmen/women. I took it out on a backcountry flyfishing expedition where I also had to pack my waders, boots, and other gear, and I needed as much extra room as I could afford in my pack. Its just right for me to be comfortable with just the bare minimum gear in the tent (headlamp, extra layer, phone, wallet, and bear spray). While sleeping, I didn’t feel any more confined than I was by my sleeping bag. (I am 6’1 and broad shouldered so this was pretty good for such a small tent.) Being able to sit upright with plenty of headroom was great too. Though I wish it had a door on both sides and a bit more ventilation that comes with that feature, it didnt feel stuffy or overly muggy throughout the night. If you want to put more gear in with you I might recommend getting the 2p but if youre willing to sacrifice that, the 1p is a great option. Its far more durable than I expected being that the walls are impressively thin. I really appreciated that this tent was ready to go, whereas a lot of the competitors 1p single walled tents needed to be seam sealed, huge plus imo.

I embarked on a backpacking trip and was pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I could carry the tent. Setting it up for the first time took me only five minutes, thanks to a helpful YouTube tutorial I had watched beforehand. Despite the heavy rain and strong winds that night, the tent proved to be a reliable shield, leaving me thoroughly impressed with its performance.

The tent’s packing was also a breeze, and it offered ample space for two people, making it an ideal choice for my trip.

Bought the backbone 1P for my wife. She is hiking the TransCatalinaTrail soon and mentioned if she had this tent she would be able to take her cook system. Guess who's drinking hot coffee on the island??

This tent is too short for me (6’3”). My feet touch one end of the tent despite fiddling with the pitch. On a single wall tent this means condensation will get my sleeping bag wet rendering it useless. When contacted, featherstone did not allow a return even though I noticed the issue immediately upon first use. Go with a company with a more forgiving return policy - this item now sits in the back of a closet

Great tent! Very well thought out. Took on a 5 day trip through canyon country. Surprising amount of head room. I am looking forward to testing it in the mountains this summer

I havent used it yet, just set it up in the backyard. So far its great. The foot box is a little narrow for my 25 inch sleeping pad but it still works great. I thought the 1p had 2 doors and vestibules, but i guess that was the old version. I might look into to getting the 2p to have more room for me and my gear. I like how small and light the 1p is. I wouldnt be opposed to using it on a multiday backpacking trip.

I just took my tent on a 7 Day trek through New Mexico at the Philmont Scout Reserve. The tent was fantastic and I am so glad I bought it. Held up in all sorts of weather conditions and terrain with no issues. It is a breeze to put up and take down and stood up to strong winds and rain. Would 100% recommend the tent. The only thing I am not sure about is the tent didn't come with any sort of ground cloth, so I brought an extra 2P one I had from another tent to protect it. I am not sure if it is necessary, but I felt better doing that. I would buy a ground cloth specifically for the tent if that was an option.

Overall satisfied with this tent, so far was used it on 2 backpacking trips of 3 nights with temp going down to 0 Celsius. It kept me warm, is lightweight, packs very small and construction seems solid. I was dissapointed with the single vestibule at the entrance, one of the reason why I chose the featherstore was for the 2 vestibules, well my fault, I didn’t look at the pictures carefully when I purchased.

I haven't used it yet. Will be the end of April beginning of May. I did take it out. Seems to be simple enough to set up. Love how lightweight it is. Color is nice, do wish it was a bit darker.

We recently put the Featherstone Backbone Trekking Pole Tent to the test, and let’s just say, it didn’t disappoint! We decided to try it out during a heavy rain and windstorm at the park, and honestly, we couldn’t have picked a better time to see how it handles extreme weather.

The tent stayed solid throughout the storm—no flapping or shaking. Even with the wind howling, it held firm, and the best part? The inside stayed completely dry! The waterproofing really worked wonders. We were expecting some water to sneak in, especially with how hard it was raining, but the Featherstone Backbone impressed us. The tub floor kept water out, and the tent itself had great ventilation, so there was no condensation buildup inside either.

What we also love about this trekking pole tent is how lightweight and easy it is to set up. It packs down small, making it a perfect option for backpacking trips. If you’re looking for a tent that can handle unpredictable weather while keeping you dry, the Featherstone Backbone is a reliable choice.

Took this out on trail and had a torrential downpour. I was pitching quite fast to keep my gear dry. Although condensation was an issue, I don't believe anything that went wrong was due to manufacturing, but purely user error. I pitched quite fast and didn't have the most ideal camping spot. I did wake up with a puddle on the right side of the footbox, so I may need to double check the seams. Other than that, this tent performed as expected, and was quite comfy in the humidity. Due to the amount of rain, I did notice the tent sagging a little but adjusted my pitch and that seemed to help. I was worried about the bottom leaking, and other than that 1 corner it was fine. All in all, I can recommend this tent, it just might take a little DIY to solve some minor problems, depending on the conditions you plan to use it in.

I haven't had the chance to use this anywhere but the backyard yet. Seam sealing was easy enough,. Excited to give this a proper try in the coming weeks. Set up was bit confusing, but was intuitive enough to figure out without instructions. The tent itself seems to be well made so far, it is my first single walled tent, and feels rather thin compared to my usual.
Still I am excited to use it more as it packs down fairly small and doesn't weigh much.

This is a very nice ultra lite tent at a great price.
It's a little narrow but works just fine with plenty of head and foot room. I am female, 5'10 and 160lbs. The vestibule is plenty big for gear and boots. Lovley tent!

After spending a few weeks with the Featherstone Backbone 1 tent I remain blown away that you can get so much tent for so little money. All of the features of a $300+ tent exist in the Backbone and then some! Although not perfect, this tent will stand up to just about anything you can throw at it.

Pros: Outstanding Value, fantastic headroom, two large vestibules with waterproof zippers, sets up in minutes, large vent at the head for air flow and premium materials throughout.
Cons: Not many but here they are...tapered width does not support a wide sleeping pad and there are two doors which is not necessary for a one person shelter and weight could be saved. That's it!

This tent is the best ultralight value on the market today. Based on materials and solid construction the Backbone should easily survive years of use in the backcountry. If you are looking for a solo trekking pole shelter that won't break the bank...look no further!

I have not been able to test it on an outing, but I have assembled it to seal the seam indicated. At first glance it seems like a very good tent, it is spacious for one person and is not claustrophobic. It takes condensation into account and has a system to evacuate it. The weight is reasonably light for the price and materials. There are lighter tents, but also with worse design or much more expensive. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Overall really good. Dealt with condensation better than I thought it would. Except when it got below freezing, woke up to ice from the top falling on me. But the other nights were above freezing and I had no condensation problems. Easy setup and the perfect amount of space for my tensor insulated long and wide which is my favorite pad.

Haven't received it yet. Where is it.
