Featherstone Moondance 25 Top Quilt Sleeping Bag Alternative

Used the bag on 5+ overnight camping trips regularly down to the 30s (F) overnight. I never had any trouble staying warm. Fabric is soft and not noticeably noisy as you shift. The weight, 850 fill power, hydrophobic coating, RDS down, all make this the best value for a down backpacking quilt on the market. I love the draft collar for the chilliest nights. Mostly I close the footbox and use the rest as a blanket.The one drawback I found was the cinch on the toe box didn’t have a single pull in the center like the draft collar. It has two pulls, one on each side. I ended up cinching and then tying them together to keep the bottom nice and closed.

Just took it on a 3 day hike with lows between 35-40. The warmth of the bag was pretty solid. I was sleeping nice and warm on the night it was 40. To be honest I would bring this bag lower than 30 degrees and if I were to I would put a liner in it. The nylon used was very soft and the bag had some amazing loft to it. The pad straps were a little tricky to use but they ended up making my bag much more snug. Overall I think this is a great bag for the price I honestly haven’t seen anything to match it’s performance with it’s price. Only con I could say is drawstring around the neck kept getting on the way but besides that I LOVE THIS BAG

I love anything with down in it from quilts to sleeping bags and outerwear. The warmth and comfort down provides is unrivaled. Expensive, yes, but you get what you pay for. This Featherstone Moodance Trail Quilt is simply an investment in comfort. Last night was one of those nights when we all knew winter was around the corner. The temperature really hadn’t dipped, but my comfort level had.There was a chill in the air and I decided it was time to try out this Featherstone quilt. In this old house there are drafts that somehow move through the house when the winds are high. One ghostly door creaks, letting me know it’s bad out there. I took the Featherstone out of its bag and nestled up in in. All the hardware is decent, but lightweight. This is not like a backpack in need of anything heavy-duty by any means.I have a heating pad in my bed, but decided to cuddle up in the Featherstone before bedtime and during the night. It was super comfortable, yet warm. The down kept my body temperature in, keeping me super comfortable during the night. I didn’t use it as a top quilt, but rather got into in as if it were a sleeping bag. The true test would come when the heating pad automatically turned off.Usually once the pad turns off, my body temperature starts to go down and I wake up. This time I, wrapped in the Featherstone, I didn’t even sense it went off. I was snug as a bug in a rug, as they say. This is an excellent sleeping bag, quilt, or however you wish to describe it. Once I was done, I was able to put it back in the bag. It’s lightweight and will be perfect for the camper, thru-hiker, or anyone who just needs any emergency quilt. Very, very highly recommended!

Very lightweight, packs down small and it's so warm! I use it in my hammock and in my zenbivy bed. It does not feel restricting like a sleeping bag. Slept in 33 degree weather and kept me warm. I paired it with a sea to summit reactor liner to sleep comfortably at 28 degrees

I was a little worried about this quilt,The price point was considerably less thanSome of the more know name brand's but it has fantastic loft. after unpacking and a few shakes it puffed right up. I live in idaho and we have real winter weather here, I spent two nights in my hammock outside and slept warm and cozy,out side temp was low 20s. I ordered a long because I wasn't sure if a regular would be big enough. its awesome I can pull it up over my head. I love the long lots of extra room.

New to using quilts and now I love them! It's hot in TX, I toss and toss a lot at night, and I'm warm natured so a quilt works great for me. I may never go back to a regular sleeping bag. The Moondance is a very soft material on the skin. It's not too hot hot to sleep in even though it's down. If it is warm, (TX summers), I sleep on top of it with a liner as a sheet, with my legs out the sides, or unzip the entire product to one flat blanket. It is so versatile! The feet box opening is handy too if I don't want to feel constricted. One of the photos makes it appear gray, but it is black with a bring orange interior. The only negative I have is when using as it should with straps, and proper pad, I wish the neck drawstring was elastic and not a hard cord. I may change this out if it bothers me enough. It may be easy to do if you have sewing skills. It packs down pretty small and is considerably lightweight.

I purchased the Regular size. The long version I think would have been better. I am 5'9" and 180 lbs. The regular "fits", though the mouth of the quilt goes just above my eyebrows if I stretch straight out. If I curl up, I can put my entire body under the quilt. However, I think I would be more comfortable in the Long/Wide version, but the regular version is "ok".I don't like the pad straps. They were at first awkward to use and I couldn't figure out how they worked. Hint: You have to decouple the snap-in buckle on the straps and then match the lose buckle ends to the corresponding buckle receptors on the quilt. Then once those are snapped in, you take the loose end of the strap and thread it through the tension buckle to your desired tension and then swing closed the tension buckle to secure the strap. The tension buckle is bulky, and I would not recommend having it under your pad as it might puncture your sleep pad/air mattress.This is my first experience with down, so when I unfurled the quilt from the stuff sack I was like. "What?...Did they just send me tissue paper?" The quilt seemed so light, airy, thin, and smaller than I expected. I thought I got jipped. However, fluffing the down up expanded the quilt to its "true" size and structure and it then looked like a “true” quilt. So nothing to worry about there.I did not experience any "see through" down. My quilt appeared adequately filled and I did not see any daylight through the fabric once the quilt was fluffed up. However, when you first take the quilt out of the stuff sack, you might feel like they only put only "four or five" feathers in there because it looks and feels paper thin and yes you will see huge gaps of daylight once you first take it out of the stuff sack. However, once fluffed up adequately, the quilt is completely opaque and feels very substantial.The quilt in the stuff sack is incredibly light (lighter than I expected, felt like “air”). Had I known that, I might have opted for the Long/Wide version. I did not opt for the Long/Wide because I wanted as small a pack as possible. However, I'm sure the Long/Wide version can compress down to a very small size in a stuff sack or compression sack.COMPRESSION SACK SIZES: This quilt fits in either a 10 Liter SeaToSummit sack of a 6 Liter SeaToSummit compression sack. the 10 Liter is easier to stuff the quilt into because it has a wider mouth. However the 6 Liter also works very well and has a smaller ultimate diameter of 5.5 inches, compared to the 10 Liter's 6.5 inch diameter. Thus the 6 Liter packs down much smaller when compressed and I prefer the 6 Liter.Weights of compression sacks with quilt are:* Original Featherstone Stuff sack + quilt = 704 grams* SeatoSummit 10 Liter (ULTRA-SIL) sack + quilt = 760 grams* SeatoSummit 6 Liter (Regular eVent) sack + quilt = 792 grams* SeatoSummit 10 Liter (Regular eVEnt) sack + quilt = 811 gramsThe ULTRA-SIL model is made with a lighter material (30 Denier nylon), is only waterproof to 10,000 hydrostatic head pressure, and has only three compression straps, while the regular eVent model compression sack is made of a heavier material (70 Denier nylon), is waterproof to 30,000 hydrostatic head pressure, and has four compression straps.As mentioned, I prefer the regular eVent 6 Liter for this Featherstone quilt since it packs up really small. I assume the ULTRA-SIL version of the 6 Liter would be lighter, but the ULTRA-SIL material is thinner and I did not want to put extra pressure on a thinner wall in a smaller container, though the 6 Liter ULTRA-SIL might be fine and very durable in your experience.Is the quilt worth it? Seems so. But I'd like to compare it to those cottage industry quilts just to get a sense of comparison, especially since this is my first time using down and I have nothing to compare this quilt to.

I purchased a “refurbished” Moondance 25 for an upcoming trip I have to the Grand Canyon. When my quilt arrived it was not at all refurbished. It was broken. The neck cinch was completely detached from one side making it unusable. I emailed customer service and was offered a refund and an additional $10 credit towards another purchase. WOW. Refurbished refers to an item that is professionally restored and cleaned to working order as per the manufacturers original specification. The unit I received was not refurbished, it was broken. I am upset with how this item was sold as a fully functional unit but left me without a quilt for my trip. Buyers beware: Refurbished doesn’t mean refurbished to this company.

Not the best experience after notifying customer service so we have decided to return both quilts for a refund.

My wife and I both love our featherstone Moondance 25. Recently, while hiking the AT in Georgia my wife fell and broke her femur. I used the quilt to keep her warm and dry while waiting for search and rescue. The team then used the quilt to immobilize her in the carry basket. I believe the warmth provided played a big role in keeping her from going into shock. This is a great product!

I bought this quilt for a thru hike of the Appalachian trail and ended up using on my thru hike of the Pacific Crest trail also. I was pleasantly surprised of how warm it kept me even on my coldest nights. I usually use a sleeping bag but now I will bring this on all my backpacking trips! The straps kept it in place all night even when I would change sleeping positions. Highest ratings to this quilt for the price! Great product!

This sleeping bag is snug and very warm. Light and packs up small. I took it on several winter kayak camping trips. Packed up small enough in the kayak and boy it kept me nice and warm in the tent! It was a snow covered trip on two occasions and I had no issues.

Great sleeping bag, very warm. Lightweight and easy to pack, I have zero complaints. This is perfect for those wanting to save space and travel light.

Was looking for a lower cost down quilt for backpacking. This will fit that bill perfectly. The down is not white and you are able to see it through the orange fabric. Not a problem, just an observation. The stuff sack that comes in the package is not a compression sack and will not keep moisture out so we replaced it. Do not store long term in the provided stuff sack, we are using a cotton pillow case so the down can breath when not on the trail.

This quilt has exceeded my expectations. Was going to buy from a cottage vendor but decided to add this to my wish list and my wife bought it for me. This isn’t the lightest or most compact quilt but for the price it is fantastic. I have slept both in my hammock and in shelters with this quilt down into the mid 20’s and have never been cold. I always look forward to pulling this quilt out and getting cozy in it!

This sleeping bag comes in it’s own very tiny bag with two adjustable cinch straps. Absolutely awesome bag that I would buy again and probably will. Different than any other bag we currently Own and everyone fights over it when we camp.One night last week we were camping and night time temps dipped to about 35 degrees. With multiple comforters and bags we were still freezing. Pulled this out of the van and used it as a blanket top and immediately warmed up.Folding and rolling up was kind of a nightmare but it’s a nice trade off for the comfort it brings. Super lightweight it would fit stuffed into a go bag or hiking bag.I wound up folding, rolling up, and folding in half held with the conch straps to get back into its little bag. But when it comes out it’s amazing.Buy it

TLDR: this is a good quality quilt, and a bargain at the price. It’s comparable to a HG Economy Burrow, and typically cheaper.My long/wide quilt is truly huge. I’m 6’2, 220 lbs and it’s almost too big. It shipped tightly packed, but has lofted up well, and is warm.The fabric is silky and comfortable, though a little delicate feeling. It’s a shame the cinch cord for the shoulder is right in the middle of the quilt, so is quite annoying.Sewing and finish quality is good, though the choice of materials for the tabs and cord locks feel a bit heavy and cheap. Placement of domes on the closures is a little off, which lessens the ability of the snap closures to relieve pressure on the zip.The sleeping pad straps have a slight design flaw, as one of the fixtures slides freely, instead of staying in place on the mat. This can be fixed with a couple of rubber o-rings or bands.It sounds like I have a lot of critiques, but I really like this quilt!
